The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the leading intergovernmental organization dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration worldwide. Established in 1951 in the aftermath of World War II, its original mandate was to help resettle displaced persons in Europe. Today, with over 175 member states and offices in more than 100 countries, IOM works closely with governments, civil society, and migrants themselves to address the many dimensions of migration. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the organization became part of the United Nations system in 2016, reflecting the growing recognition of migration as a central issue in global development and international cooperation. IOM’s core activities include assisting migrants in need, facilitating voluntary return and reintegration, and supporting governments in managing migration more effectively.

The organization also plays a crucial role in responding to humanitarian crises, offering emergency assistance to people displaced by conflict, natural disasters, or other emergencies. It helps countries strengthen border management, combat human trafficking, and promote safe and legal migration pathways. Beyond immediate humanitarian support, IOM focuses on long-term development, recognizing the important contributions that migrants make to societies and economies. Its programs encourage social inclusion, protect the rights of migrants, and build resilience in communities affected by migration pressures. IOM also supports research and provides data on global migration trends, which inform evidence-based policymaking. Through initiatives such as the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, IOM advocates for international cooperation on migration governance. Despite ongoing challenges such as irregular migration, xenophobia, and the impact of climate change on displacement, the organization continues to uphold its mission of ensuring that migration benefits both migrants and the societies they join.
